The Horse Trained Dog Trainer

One of the most important things one can ask is “why” we do what we do. What motivates and drives us? What connections are most important? How did you get from there to here? Pepper’s answer to that question made me think of this wonderful quote:

“You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.”             – Woodrow Wilson

Fear Free Seminar with Dr. Marty Becker, DVM

On April 26th, the A&R Critter Care team was privileged to attend a Seminar hosted at Mile High Stadium where we heard Dr. Marty Becker speak about an initiative called Fear Free.  To say the least, we were incredibly impressed and are making it a priority for ARCC to be the first professional pet care service (in the country!) to have a Fear Free Certified Professional and begin implementing this practice! We absolutely loved hearing more about this initiative because, being veterinary professionals, we’ve felt that there is always more we can do to help reduce a pet’s fear and anxiety  when it comes to not only veterinary visits, but also medical treatments at home. Pet Food: 3 Things Your Veterinarian Probably Won’t Tell You

There are thousands of commercial pet foods out there. Standard kibble, organic, grain-free, canned, raw, dehydrated. Home cooking is also becoming more popular. Everyone from the pet store clerk to your veterinarian to your neighbor has a different opinion of what the best pet food is. Unfortunately, many pet owners are unable to ask their vet about alternative diets because they are afraid they’ll be berated for wanting to feed something other than kibble. This makes it super confusing when trying to find the right food for your pet. Here are three tips to use when considering a change in your pet’s diet:

10 Reasons Why Veterinary House Calls Are Awesome!

10.  You don’t have to go anywhere.

There was a time, so long ago, when the doctor would come to your house, treat your illness, then have a cup of coffee with your family.  Up until recently, the only doctors who made house calls anymore were farm vets.  Now you have me, Dr. D – I will come to your house, take care of your pets, and leave you happier and less stressed out.  You don’t even have to give me a cup of coffee.

9.  You don’t have to get in the car.

Can’t drive?  Physical limitation?  Giant stubborn dog who won’t get in the car?  Little dog who vomits every time you drive them somewhere?  Multiple children (or just one) to cart around with you?  It’s tough sometimes.  As Bob Marley says, don’t worry about a thing.  Dr. D will come to you. A Whole New World of Pet Therapy with a Pawsitive Touch

My 9-yr-old cat, Blue, has chronic, painful hips. It started about 6 months ago when she stopped being able to jump up on the bed. She was a little more vocal when being picked up, and didn’t want to play with her housemates. We brought her in to see our vet, and after doing x-rays, found some rough aging changes in her hips that were pretty ‘ouchy’. We started supplements, pain medication, and cold-laser therapy, which helped a bit. She was definitely more comfortable, but hated the cold laser. And trust me, when your cat doesn’t like something (even though it helps), everyone knows about it. Then we found Dana. [Read more…]

As we age, we can still benefit from that companionship. Despite these positive benefits,  a dilemma is occurring—what happens to beloved pets when their owners move to assisted living communities?
